A loss that lingers

Inside a small funeral chapel in Long Beach, California, Sheila Hoonsan’s mom lay in an open casket. But she was unrecognizable. Her face and chest were swollen after weeks in an intensive care unit with COVID-19. Her hands, which Hoonsan never got to hold before she died, were bloated and pale.
